WAMMA NextGen Wrestling Program

Join one of Canada’s most successful competitive Wrestling team!

The sport of wrestling imparts life lessons like few others. Wrestling is inherently demanding, calling for a strong work ethic. Wrestlers carry this ethic beyond the mat, using it to achieve success in various pursuits. Wrestling also teaches mental and physical toughness.

Wrestling serves as a life primer in numerous ways. Renowned coach Dan Gable aptly stated, ‘Once you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy.’

Competition

Competing in wrestling tournaments is optional but encouraged. Athletes have the opportunity to compete in several tournaments throughout Canada and the United States including ; Las Vegas, Iowa, Ottawa, Hamilton, Brampton and more. Competing in tournaments develops strong team bonding, and the camaraderie of being on the road is often the highlight of the season for many competitors!

Free style Wrestling vs Folkstyle Wrestling

Freestyle wrestling is an Olympic sport and the most widely practiced worldwide. Athletes attempt to pin their opponent’s shoulders to the mat. Points are scored by ‘exposing’ the opponent’s back to the mat at an angle exceeding 90 degrees.

Folkstyle wrestling, also known as collegiate wrestling, is exclusively practiced in the United States. It is the preferred wrestling style for Americans from kindergarten through their final year of university. This style places a greater emphasis on grappling, with points awarded for exposing an opponent’s back at an angle exceeding 45 degrees for a minimum of 3 seconds.

WAMMA NextGen is one of the very few clubs in Canada to compete in the United-States in Folkstyle Wrestling and in Free style.

Beginner Classes

Folkstyle wrestling, freestyle wrestling, and Jiu Jitsu are three grappling sports sharing several similarities. Our blended approach enables athletes to compete and excel in all three disciplines. Our beginner class introduces newcomers to these sports, fostering self-defense skills and athleticism. Athletes can choose to specialize or continue pursuing all three disciplines later on.
